Health & Social Care Level 3 Extended Cer tificate What’s it all about? Through a combination of theoretical study and hands- on experience, this qualificationwill helpyou to develop the necessary knowledge and skills that can support progression into the workplace, apprenticeship, and to higher education health or social care study. You might be interested in this qualification if you want a qualification to take alongside and enhance your A Level studies, that builds applied or practical skills. In the examined units, you will study key knowledge and understanding relevant to health and social care. In the non-examined assessment (NEA) units, you will demonstrate knowledge and skills you learn by completing applied or practical assignments. “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel” Maya Angelou To get started: In order to study the Level 3 Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care you must have two grade 4s in GCSE Science. To get the most out of this course you will undertake independent study and research tasks alongside your classwork. What next? Both the subject-specific knowledge, understanding and skills, and broader transferable skills developed through these units, will help you progress in related areas such as: • University : BSc Nursing (Adult/Child/Learning disabilities/Mental health); BSc Midwifery; BSc Health and social care: BSc Healthcare and Health Science; BSc Health Sciences; BSc Paramedic Science; BSc Public Health and Wellbeing; BSc Nutrition; BA Social Work. • Work : Residential Care Home; Nursing apprenticeship; Doctor’s surgery; Opticians; Pharmacy Assistant; Nursery/Child-Care centres; Hospital (non-nursing). Exam and Assessment Information: Level 3 Alternative Academic Qualification (AAQ) Extended Certificate In this qualification, students must complete and be assessed on six units: • Two mandatory externally assessed units • Principles of health and social care (taken in the first year of study) • Anatomy and physiology for health and social care (taken in the second year of study) • Two mandatory coursework units – Person- centred approach to care • Supporting people with mental health conditions • Two additional coursework units (these will be finalised by the taster day) Supporting people with long term physiological conditions Investigating public health Supporting people in relation to sexual health, pregnancy and postnatal health Supporting healthy nutrition and lifestyles These subjects might complement this qualification: • A Level Biology • A Level Psychology • A Level Sociology • A-Level PE Any other course where evaluation, research, or Our students say … “I chose to study Health and Social Care because I love to help people and I was very interested in what the course offers. I love studying the anatomy aspect of the course!” Entry Requirements Five GCSEs at Grade 4 and above AND Grade 4 in two GCSE sciences or 44 in combined science Aims & Learning Outcomes Cambridge Advanced National qualification has four Performance Objectives, which are designed to build confidence, independent learning, and collaborative working. • Show knowledge and understanding. • Apply knowledge and understanding. • Analyse and evaluate knowledge, understanding and performance. • Demonstrate and apply skills and processes relevant to the subject. The course will enable students to develop knowledge, understanding and skills, relevant to the subject. You will have the opportunity to apply what you learn to real-life contexts, such as: • Communicating and collaborating effectively with individuals • Creating and presenting/delivering information to an individual. • Independent learning, spending time outside of lessons completing research solve problems. • Researching topic areas and recording research sources, then using them to interpret findings and present evidence. • Recommending care and support for individuals. • Presentation skills by presenting recommendations to others. 32
