Working Together, Caring Individually Personal Wellbeing Traditional Foundations, 21 st Century Education 05 It is important in a large school that students are cared for in a personal way. Our curriculum is designed to personalise their learning experience and our pastoral structures are also set up to ensure that we have individuals’ wellbeing at the heart of our philosophy. Each student is given an identity as part of a year group, a tutor group and a house. There are four houses (Airedale, Nidderdale, Swaledale and Wharfedale), which provide the competitive structure for sporting and other activities. Each year group has a dedicated and highly qualified Associate Assistant Headteacher and two Year Managers who support students throughout their time at King James’s. Our student services team offers further support for students though careers guidance and a Family Support Officer, amongst others. A school nurse is also on hand during the day. We devote great care and attention to helping youngsters manage the transition from primary school to secondary school. We meet regularly with primary school teachers and our Head of Learning Support visits primary schools to discuss the needs of individual pupils as they transfer. We hold a number of events and transition days for Year 6 students during the summer term so that they can begin to familiarise themselves with King James’s School. “King James’s School is a caring environment where pupils learn well, pupils feel safe and supported” - Ofsted report, 2023
