Exams and Assessment Information • This GCSE is a 100% non-exam assessment. Work will be internally assessed by the school and externally moderated. Grade Scale: 9-1 • Component 1 – Portfolio - non exam assessment (NEA) (60% of final grade) • Component 2 – Externally set assignment - non exam assessment (NEA) (40% of final grade) What will I learn about? • How to design and create imaginative personal work • How to work with a wide range of different materials to produce original experimental work • How to develop a series of textile pieces exploring a range of media including sublimation printing, fabric painting, applique, machine embroidery, free hand machine embroidery, laser cutting and fabric manipulation, as well as exploring themes of your own • The role of textiles artists/designers and respond to their work • A wide range of topic areas: fashion design, fashion textiles, costume design, digital textiles, printed and/ or dyed fabrics, domestic textiles, wallpaper, interior design, constructed textiles, art textiles and installed textiles TEXTILE DESIGN How will I learn? • Designing and making a range of textile products, prototypes and samples. You will also have the opportunity to use traditional skills and modern technologies • Undertaking a number of projects and a well-balanced sketchpad/portfolio will be produced Where could Textile Design take me? • This creative and thought-provoking qualification gives students the practical skills and confidence to succeed in a number of careers, especially those in the creative industries. Students will gain a real understanding of what it means to be a designer, alongside the knowledge and skills sought by higher education and employers. • Fashion and textiles are major employers in the UK offering a highly diverse and exciting range of career opportunities including: fashion designer, fabric designer, pattern cutter, interior design, textile art, fashion journalism, stylist, window dresser, retail buyer, theatre designer, sportswear designer, fashion promotion/merchandising, upholsterer, wallpaper designer, teacher or lecturer, footwear design, fashion retailing, costume design for theatre and film and/or fashion illustration. • Fashion and Textiles is the 15th largest industry in the UK (out of 81), similar in size to both the food and beverage and telecommunication industries. 4,000 students per year enroll on textile/fashion Higher Education courses.
