Exams and Assessment Information The qualification equips you with sound specialist knowledge through practical application. • One compulsory examination on contempory issues in sport, taken at the end of year 11. Topics include: - Issues that affect participation - Role of sport in promoting values including the Olympics - Behaviour and sporting etiquette - Performance enhancing drugs - Hosting major sporting events - National governing bodies - Technology in sport The exam is out of 70 marks and is 1 hour and 15 minutes (40% of final grade) • Two centre-assessed units (assignment based) throughout year 10 and 11. • The First unit is on performance and leadership in sports activities. Students will: - Develop skills in two different activities from the approved list - Perform a range of skills and demonstrate use of tactics and decision making in your sports - Identify strengths & weaknesses of a perfor- mance - Plan, lead & evaluate a sports activity session This unit is out of 80 marks (40% of final grade) • The second unit is on sport and media - Different types of media that cover sport - Positive & negative effects of media on the sport, performers and spectators - Sponsorship in sport - Education & sport This unit is out of 40 marks (20% of final grade) What will I learn about? • Contempory issues in sport such as participation, ethics and values and how they impact different activities • The use of technology in sport • How to develop your skills as a performer in two different sports • How to plan and lead a sports session • Effective analysis of skills and performance • The relationship between media and sport • The importance of communication, planning and team-working skills through leading sporting activities • The importance of fitness essential for participating in sport and exercise SPORT STUDIES How will I learn? • Using real life scenarios to apply theoretical content in practical situations • Engaging classroom lessons • Being introduced to the theory in a step-by-step approach before using this to complete the set assignments (NEA) • Becoming aware of your own skill levels and understanding areas to improve Where could Sport take me? • Students will gain a level 2 qualification that is equivalent to a GCSE. • Level 2 provides a suitable foundation for further study within the sector such as progression on to level 3 qualificatioms within the sector. • It also provides a pathway to apprenticeships within the exercise, physical activity, sport and health sector. • It inspires students to consider a career in sport and to develop their understanding of the current issues.
